Chapter 4

When she came to, she sat up quickly. She had no idea how long she had been out. She put her hands to her chest, just in case they had done something like cut her open. She was happy to find the usual ECG lines and not bandages.

There was a nurse in the room that Joanna remembered from last time. Sasha Rowland was her name, at least Joanna thought it was. She was the nurse that had called her a fairy tale princess. Sasha did not look any more sympathetic or impressed with her this time.

“You’re awake,” she said. Joanna felt like her mouth was full of cotton.

“I am,” Joanna said. “Where’s Nathan?”

Sasha glared at her. “Dr. Midas?” she asked.

“Yes,” she said, seeing the judgemental look as soon as it crossed the nurse’s face. “Is he still here?”

“He’s here again,” the nurse said. “Considering you’ve been out for three days.”

“Three days?” Joanna blurted out. “What...what happened?”

“I don’t know,” the nurse replied. “I’ll let the man obsessed with you tell you.”

Joanna managed to sit up and glanced over at her vital signs. They were strong now, and she felt better by the second. However, nothing felt better than the moment Nathan walked into the room.

“Hi,” he said. “Welcome to the land of the living.”

“Nathan,” she said, and reached out to hold his hand. He took it quickly, and pulled up a chair to sit beside her. Even though he was looking at her with affection, she noticed that he glanced at her vitals too. It made her smile. “Always the doctor.”

“You seem like you’re doing better,” he said. “I was worried there for a bit, but it looks like their treatment worked. Although I consulted, I cannot take credit for your recovery. Conflict, and all.

“What did you do?” she asked. “Will I find robot parts inside of me when I take a closer look?”

“No,” he chuckled. “You were just malnourished.”

“Malnourished?” she blurted out. “But I didn’t...I’ve been eating just fine.”

“You may have been eating just fine, but you weren’t absorbing anything,” he said. “You were basically wasting your time eating food.”

“Oh,” she replied, and raised an eyebrow in disbelief. “And that’s...normal for….”

“It’s not normal for anything,” he said. “But there may be a connection between the HP and your stomach suddenly deciding to kick it.”

“But I’m not in full intestinal failure, am I?” she asked, with fear in her voice. She had seen someone like that last time she was in the hospital, and she knew it was a terrible thing.

“No,” he assured her. “You aren’t. And I don’t think you will be, anytime soon.”

“Excellent,” she said. “So...it’s just some IV’s and then I’m good to go.”

“I don’t know,” he answered. “But I intend to find out.”

She squeezed his hand.

“I know you’ve always got my back, Nathan,” she said.

She felt him look away then and a shiver went down her spine. Something was wrong.

“Nathan?” she asked, and he looked back to meet her eyes with a smile.

“Jo, I don’t want you to worry about anything right now,” he said.
